Asbestos Related Diseases

Our environment includes substances that can affect our health. These include naturally occurring minerals  and human-made chemicals. For example, asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that can cause severe  health problems.

  • Asbestos miners, people who worked with as best as  products and people who lived in mining areas developed illnesses with very similar symptoms hey had a persistent cough, shortness of breath and blue colour to their lips.
  • These people were diagnosed with asbestosis, which  is a lung disease caused by breathing in asbeÈ™tos fibres.
  • Each asbestos fibre is 50-200 times thinner than a human hair and when the fibres are floating in the air they cannot be seen.
  • When the fibres are breathed in, they remain in the lungs and cause inflammation and scarring. The hard, inflexible scar tissue makes it difficult to get enough oxygen into the body, causing the lips to turn blue.
  • Asbestos can also cause mesothelioma - a cancer that develops 30-40 years after exposure to asbestos.
  • Before it was recognized as being dangerous, asbestos  mined and used in the manufacture of corrugated roofing, water pipes, fabrics and car brake linings.
  • However, from 2003 the use of all forms of asbestos was banned in Australia. Although asbestos cannot be used an new buildings, it is still found in old buildings and is gradually being replaced by safer materials. Anyone working with asbestos needs to wear safety masks.
